COACHING – what is it?

Coaching is about helping people on the journey to reach their full potential. It is particularly relevant in today’s challenging world where life’s demands are increasing as our financial and time resources diminish. In our coaching relationship I will offer you an opportunity to press the pause button. I will provide the means for you to take time and space in a supportive environment so that you can be resourced to make the changes you want in your personal and/or professional life.

Some reasons why you might want to engage a coach:

  • You are overwhelmed by things that need to be done and you cannot find the energy required
  • You want more success at work and in your relationships
  • You want to start or finish a big project
  • You want a fresh way to look at problems and opportunities in work and /or in your personal life
  • You want an increased sense of achievement and well-being
  • While you have an idea of what you want to do, to be, and to achieve you cannot seem to make it happen on your own

My approach to coaching

Effective coaching is a form of change facilitation. As both an experienced facilitator and a qualified coach I am very well resourced to work with you on a one to one basis to help you to address your own challenges, respond to opportunities, and to reach more of your own potential.

There are many models of coaching. The one I work from is called Co-Active Coaching . This style of coaching has four key principles that will shape how we will work together, namely:

  1. You as client are naturally creative, resourceful and whole, and you will find your own answers in the right supportive environment. There is nothing wrong with you and I am not an expert with the answers
  2. You as client will set the agenda for how we will work together
  3. Together we will dance in the moment – it will be my job as coach to ensure we respond to what is really happening, and hear the often quietly spoken but for you vitally important truth
  4. Together we will recognize that decisions made are interconnected. It is my job to help you as client to recognize the ripple effect – how for example a career choice might impact on other areas of your life. So no matter what issue we are focusing on we will be mindful of your whole life context

The Reluctant Client

Often a client who has benefited from coaching will talk about their initial reluctance – how they could not understand the value of simply committing to talk to someone as a way of making changes, or how they had difficulty understanding the difference between counseling and coaching. A lot of coaches including myself offer a free initial consultation to help you to find out more about coaching, to decide for yourself if this is right for you now, and if I am the correct coach to work with you.

The Practicalities

Coaching sessions will be arranged to meet your needs, and can be face to face meetings, by telephone or by Skype using video. Each session lasts 50 minutes. Normally I work with a client over a period of six sessions before we review. In between each session you will do some work and I will provide follow up support through an email or a telephone call (your choice).
